Your guide to DEXA

Measures bone mineral density. What to expect, how to prepare and what to ask before booking.

Last reviewed 7 Oct 2026 · Information only

What is it?

DEXA uses a low dose of X-rays to measure bone mineral density, usually at the hip and spine.

What is it used for?

It can help assess osteoporosis and fracture risk alongside your medical history. Body composition scans are different from a clinical osteoporosis assessment.

How does it feel and how long does it take?

You lie on an open scanning table while an arm passes over you. A scan usually takes 10 to 20 minutes and is normally painless.

How should I prepare?

Wear clothing without metal fastenings. Tell the centre about recent contrast or other imaging tests. Ask whether calcium supplements need to be paused.

Who needs extra safety checks?

Tell the team if you may be pregnant. Results need interpretation with your age, risk factors and health history. A scan alone does not determine treatment.

A scan is not a substitute for clinical assessment. A normal result does not rule out every condition. Partner clinics include a clinician or GP call before the scan to confirm the right test.
